Being a Child Actress in Richmond, Virginia

Hi everyone! Richmond, Virginia is my hometown, and it's also where my acting story really began. A lot of people think you have to move to a huge city to start acting, but I want to show you what it's actually like being a kid actress right here in Richmond.

Richmond has a growing film and commercial scene that a lot of people don't know about. There are local production companies, video crews, and Richmond-area brands that need kids for their commercials and ads all the time. The opportunities are closer than you might think — sometimes they're right in your own city.

Some of my own commercial work has happened right here in the Richmond area, including a commercial for a local children's hospital and a commercial called String Ring. I always keep the specific details of a shoot private, since that's part of being professional on set, but I can tell you that every crew I've worked with has been kind, patient, and focused on making sure kid actors feel comfortable and safe.

One thing that surprised me the first time I filmed a commercial was how much waiting happens between takes! You get your hair and makeup touched up, you go over your lines or your blocking (that's the fancy word for where you're supposed to stand and move), and then when the camera finally rolls, you give it your full energy for just a few seconds or minutes at a time.

Filming commercials in Richmond has taught me how important it is to stay flexible. Schedules shift, lighting changes, and sometimes a scene gets done again and again until the director is happy with it. Instead of getting frustrated, I try to stay calm, keep my energy up, and remind myself that every take is a chance to do my best.

I've also learned a lot about patience and listening. Directors and photographers give directions quickly, and the kids who do best are the ones who listen carefully and try their best on the very next take, without needing everything repeated. That skill has helped me on every set, not just here in Richmond.

Something I really love about being a young actress in Richmond is the community. I've met other kid actors and models at local auditions and shoots, and instead of feeling like competition, it feels more like we're all cheering each other on. Seeing familiar faces at castings makes the whole experience feel less scary and a lot more fun.

If you're a kid in Richmond, or anywhere really, who dreams of acting, my biggest piece of advice is to start local. Look into community theater, school plays, and local casting calls in your own city. Every experience, even the small ones, teaches you something that helps you on the next job — and you never know which local opportunity might turn into something bigger.
